NASCAR Nationwide Series Race 4 of 35 – Atlanta Motor
Speedway
SAM’S TOWN 300 RECAP:
Following a weekend of rain delays in California, the NASCAR
Nationwide Series rolled into sunny Las Vegas Motor Speedway for
the Sam’s Town 300. With the entertainment and excitement of the
famous Vegas Strip not far away, the drivers of the Nationwide
Series put on a show of their own as they took to the track for
300 miles of action-packed racing on Saturday afternoon. Kevin
Harvick and the No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet rolled off 10th
for the Sam’s Town 300 and continued to run in the top 10 for
most of the race. Harvick and the No. 33 team was able to cross
the finish line in the fourth position and score their second
top-five finish of the season.
HOT
ATLANTA STATS:
In
just six nationwide Series starts at Atlanta Motor Speedway,
Harvick has captured one top-five and three top-10 finishes. The
only DNF on record for Harvick at this track came during his
rookie season (2000) in the Nationwide Series and was his first
career start at the track. In 2006, Harvick entered the
Nicorette 300 in a Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) car, starting the
race 30th and finishing just outside the top 10 in the 11th
position. This week’s race will mark Harvick’s second start at
the track in a KHI Chevrolet.
CHASSIS HISTORY:
The
No. 33 Camping World team will unload chassis No. 038 at Atlanta
Motor Speedway for the Nicorette 300 Saturday, March 8. This
chassis made its race debut earlier this year at the Auto Club
Speedway of Southern California for the Stater Bros. 300.
Starting the race in the sixth position, Harvick brought chassis
No. 038 home with a solid third-place finish, his best career
finish in a Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) car.
100
STRONG:
Upon
scoring his second top-five in a row this season, Harvick has
now recorded 100 top-five finishes in just 195 career starts in
the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
KHI
DOUBLE ATTACK:
For
the Nicorette 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Kevin Harvick Inc.
will have two drivers vying for their first win at the track in
the Nationwide Series. In six starts at the track, Harvick’s
best Nationwide finish came last year when he finished second.
Rookie of the Year contender Cale Gale will make his second
start of the season in the No. 77 KHI Rheem Chevrolet. This will
mark Gale’s first start at the fast 1.5-mile Atlanta track.
BEFORE THE RACE WITH DRIVER KEVIN HARVICK:
After two top-five finishes, what are your expectations entering
Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Nicorette 300 Saturday?:
“Every week I look to be up front at the end, and ultimately
contend for the win. The past two weeks we’ve had good cars and
were able to walk away with good finishes. As a team, we just
need to find the consistency each week and carry that from track
to track.”
On
returning to Atlanta Motor Speedway, the site of his first NSCS
Win:
"I
will be honest with you, that whole first win and that first
year was really just kind of a blur. We go back and it just
seems like so much has happened since then, you almost forget
about it, but every time you go back, you get that reminder of
how things went and what went on. It is obviously something you
can't do again, win your first race, so it is just pretty cool
and go back and watch the race and see how it all finished and
how it all shook out. It is a special place for us to go back
every time just because of the fact that was the place of our
first Cup win.
"When I watch the race, the only thing I think about is I drove
in high and I probably should have went low. I almost threw the
thing away in a half of a race track there. That is what I think
about every time I watch it is why did I go high and not go low.
"It
worked, barely, but it worked. I had gotten to that point by
racing on the bottom and for some reason on the last lap, I
thought he (Jeff Gordon) was going to go high because I had been
going on the bottom but, he wound up going to the bottom and I
went to the top.
RACE
PREP WITH CREW CHIEF WALLY ROGERS:
Entering Atlanta Motor Speedway with Chassis No. 038, which
finished third earlier this year at the Auto Club Speedway of
Southern California, what are your expectations?:
“I
think we have a good shot coming to Atlanta with this chassis
and hopefully the momentum of two top-five finishes in a row
will carry over. Anytime Kevin (Harvick) gets in the car, you
have a shot to win the race and we have put our self in
contention the last two weeks and just need to continue having
strong runs and being there at the end.
