HAMPTON, Ga.
(March 10, 2008) ---
Following a slow start to the
2008 season, the No. 2 American Commercial Lines (ACL)team came
to Atlanta Motor Speedway looking to turn their luck around.
Rain once again put a wrench into practice on Friday as the team
was relegated to only a one hour practice session. Sprague
complained of a tight-handling race truck. With a few minor
adjustments the No 2 ACL team felt they were ready for
qualifying.
Going out late in the
qualifying session Sprague and the No. 2 ACL team were
optimistic about their chances. However, when Kevin Harvick
Inc. (KHI) teammate Ron Hornaday laid down a fast lap only a few
trucks ahead of Sprague, he knew the pole was going to be hard
to grab. Timing in with the fifth fastest lap of the session,
Sprague reported to the team that he was very tight through the
corners, but felt that this condition would be alleviated as
night fell.
With a good qualifying effort
under their belts the No. 2 ACL team took the green flag with
high hopes. On lap five Sprague radioed the team and reported
that the truck was “free everywhere” and that he would like an
adjustment to be tightened up.
Caution flew for the first time
on lap 18. Sprague came down pit road in the fifth position for
their first scheduled pit stop of the night. Taking fuel and
four tires, making a small air pressure adjustment, No. 2 ACL
team pulled off a fast stop sending Sprague back to competition
in second place.
Competition resumed at lap 25.
Sprague radioed to the team that his truck seemed to be a “slow
to warm up” truck, meaning it took a few laps to get heat into
the tires and for the truck to handle to Sprague’s liking.
However, after it did he was one of the fastest trucks on the
track.
By lap 35 the race went on a
long green-flag run. Sprague reported to the team that for some
reason the truck had gone to the tight side, but would come to
him as the laps went on.
Caution flew for the second
time on lap 40. Sprague came down pit road in the second
position. On the pit stop the team decided to take fuel only. A
quick stop by the No. 2 ACL team placed Sprague at the top of
the leader board for the first time of the 2008 season.
As competition resumed, Sprague
settled into the third position choosing to save his tires and
bide his time for a charge at the end of the race. By the
half-way mark Sprague remained in the third position but was
continuing to gain time on the leaders.
The long runs were advantageous
to the No. 2 ACL Chevrolet as they continued to gain time on the
leaders and place all but seven trucks one lap down. By lap 85
teams began to make green-flag pit stops for what most believed
would be the final stop of the race.
Running in the third position,
Sprague brought the No. 2 ACL Chevrolet down pit road at lap
90. Pitting for four tires, fuel and making no adjustments the
team again pulled off another quick stop. “That was the money
stop right there boys,” said Sprague over the radio following
the exchange.
As green-flag stops cycled
through, Sprague and the No.2 ACL team found themselves
comfortably in the third position gaining on the leaders.
However, on lap 110 their fortunes changed as the caution flew
for only the third time for a brief spurt of rain.
A call to pit on lap 113
brought the No. 2 ACL Chevrolet down pit road for four tires and
fuel. However, lug nut trouble on the front resulted in extra
time spent on pit road relegating the No. 2 ACL Chevrolet back
to the seventh position for the restart.
Caution flew for the final time
at lap 120 for another rain shower. NASCAR brought the trucks
to pit lane for an abbreviated red flag until they could quickly
dry the track. Competition resumed for a four lap shootout.
Sprague and the No. 2 ACL team
finished the American Commercial Lines 200 sixth capturing their
first top-10 finish of the season.
“We had a really good race
truck tonight,” said Sprague. “I’m really proud of our entire
No. 2 ACL team. We have had a rocky beginning to the 2008
season, but I see this as a turning point for this team. It
feels good to get a top-10 finish. We will go to Martinsville
in two weeks and really show them what our team has.”
Up next for the No. 2 ACL team
is the Kroger 250 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway which can be
seen live on Fox at 3 p.m., ET.
