Gale Gets
Caught Up in “The Big One;” Earns 22nd-Place Finish at Home
Track
TALLADEGA,
Ala. (April 28, 2008) - Unloading at the high banks of
Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, the No. 33 Camping World team
had high hopes as Rookie of the Year Contender and Mobile, Ala.
native Cale Gale made his fourth start of the season in the
Nationwide Series. Gale had a fast qualifying run placing him
ninth on the starting grid, but the day ended with a hard fought
22nd-place finish after he was swept into a huge multi-car crash
midway through the race.
“We had a really fast car,” said Gale. “Unfortunately, we got
caught in the ‘big one’ and had to bring the car to the garage
for repairs and lost some laps that put us out of contention.
The guys did a great job all weekend working on the No. 33
Camping World Chevrolet and gave me a fast car. This wasn’t the
finish I wanted in front of my home crowd, but I was able to get
more laps on the superspeedway and learn a lot today. Next time
I will definitely approach Talladega differently.”
Typical of Talladega, Gale was in the midst of three-wide racing
for most of the race as he ran in the top 15. With coaching from
team co-owner and teammate Kevin Harvick, as well as Kevin’s Cup
Series spotter, Billy O’Dea, Gale was able to apply the
information as he maneuvered the No. 33 car around the 2.66-mile
superspeedway.
Just after passing the half-way mark on lap 69, Gale was caught
up in an accident marked as the ‘big one’ of the Aaron’s 312.
NASCAR red flagged the race on lap 72 to clear the track as the
team devised a plan to make repairs. Gale returned to the track,
four laps down. Soon after, NASCAR black flagged the No. 33 car
and informed the team Gale would need to bring the car to the
garage for additional repairs. Following the garage visit, Gale
returned to the track 14 laps down, resulting in a 22nd-place
finish.
The team remains sixth in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Owner’s
Point standings heading into Richmond (Va.) International
Raceway where two-time Nationwide Series champion Kevin Harvick
will be back in the driver’s seat.
