Harvick Battles Back From Lap One Incident for 18th-Place
Finish at Chicago
JOLIET, Ill. (July 14, 2008)
— Kevin Harvick and the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Camping
World Chevrolet started the Dollar General 300 from the fourth
position but had to battle back from a lap one incident to
finish 18th.
“We
had a good night tonight,” said Harvick. “Despite the incident
on lap one, the guys worked hard and we got a decent finish for
our Camping World Chevrolet.”
Starting from the fourth position, Harvick was immediately
involved in an incident on lap one when the No. 20 car missed a
shift, causing damage to the front of the No. 33 car when
Harvick couldn’t avoid the slowing car. The team quickly created
a game plan to fix the damage sustained in the incident.
Sliding backwards after the contact, Harvick lost one lap on lap
45 while running in the 20th position.
Harvick eventually received his lap back on lap 53 when the
leaders began pitting, putting him in the 11th position. The
caution came out on lap 54, giving the team the break they
needed. Entering pit road from the ninth position, the team
quickly changed four tires, added fuel and went to work on the
damage to the front end. The team made a second stop under
caution, making sure the hood was secure on the car. Harvick
restarted on lap 61 in the eighth position. Due to the
green-flag stops and the timing of the caution, only nine cars
were on the lead lap at the restart. Once back on the track,
Harvick radioed the team to let them know the previous run was
“not bad, just a little tight off (the corners).”
One
lap later, on lap 62, the second caution of the night waved.
With cars at the tail end of the lead lap on the restart and in
front of the leader at the time of the caution, 17 cars were now
on the lead lap. The KHI team stayed out and restarted on lap 67
in eighth place.
Moving as high as fifth on lap 69, Harvick opted to pit on lap
88, under caution, to continue repairs to the front-end damage.
Harvick restarted on lap 93 in the 19th position.
Caught in traffic, Harvick was able to battle his way to 15th on
lap 103. With a tight-handling car, Harvick slid back to 17th by
the time green-flag stops began for the second time of the night
on lap 147. Losing one lap to the leaders on lap 151, Harvick
was able to cross the finish line in 18th place.
