KHI Crew Member Spotlight:
Randy Armstrong
Rear-Tire Changer
No. 2 Truck Series Team
Rear-tire changer, Randy Armstrong, came to Kevin Harvick Inc.
(KHI) in March 2007. Armstrong has a long background in racing.
Growing up in Mobile, Alabama close to current teammates Jeremy
Lewis, truck chief on the No. 2 and Cale Gale, KHI driver and
shock specialist, Armstrong spent the majority of his life
racing.
Before joining KHI, Armstrong served as front-tire changer at
both Phoenix Racing and Biagi Racing. Armstrong enjoys traveling
to the short tracks on the circuit.
“Richmond is my favorite track,” said Armstrong. “I like it
because it is fast and races like a 1.5-mile track, but it is
still a short track. It reminds me of a lot of the tracks back
home in Alabama.”
As a seasoned crew member when asked which track was the most
difficult to maneuver on pit road Armstrong said, “Martinsville
is probably the toughest track that we go to because of the
narrow pit boxes. I really spread out when I change tires. It is
difficult for the driver to get the truck into the box. We
usually face a lot of close calls at Martinsville”
The same sentiment rings true with most of the crew members who
work at KHI and were apart of the championship last year. One of
Armstrong’s fondest memories over the past year was winning the
championship with veteran Ron Hornaday. “Even though I was not
on the actual No. 33 truck team last year it was a complete
victory for the entire KHI organization and a testament to
everyone’s hard work and dedication.”
Another career defining moment for Armstrong occurred during the
2007 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Talladega Superspeedway
when the No. 77, which Armstrong served as front-tire changer
for, rolled into victory lane with a one-two KHI finish with
drivers Bobby Labonte and Tony Stewart.
“Talladega last year was just awesome,” remembered Armstrong. “
It is one of those days where everything went right, not only
for the No. 77 but for the entire KHI team.”
